8 Tips for Job Interview Success

Getting an interview is just the beginning. Regardless of your professional experience, always take time to prepare for a job interview. After all, first impressions are everything, so make the right one with these job interview tips.

1) Practice your answers.

Interviews are an opportunity to sell your experience and abilities. Practice answering questions with a friend or record yourself with your smartphone or webcam. 

2) Clean up your social media accounts.

Make your first impression in person—not via a Facebook photo of you holding a plastic red cup during your friend’s birthday party last weekend.

3) Bring a pen and paper.

You’re likely to cover a lot of information during an interview, so bring something to take notes. This also shows that you’re responsible and well prepared.

4) Make copies of your resume.

You never know who might be joining your interview, so bring a few copies of resume to share with everyone in the room.

5) Arrive on time.

This should go without saying, but if you find yourself running late contact your interviewer as soon as possible to reschedule. Arriving late to a job interview without notice may make you appear irresponsible and disrespectful of other people’s time.

6) Sit up straight and make eye contact.

Good posture and eye contact go a long way during a job interview. They demonstrate confidence and help make a great impression.

7) Ask questions.

Write down some questions that will help you find out if the job and company are a good fit. For example, bring up expectations for the role, discuss the company’s goals, or find out why your interviewer enjoys working at the company.

8) Send a thank-you note.

Whether it’s electronically or with postage, follow up your interview with a thank-you note. Some people recommend emailing because it’s fast and creates and easy avenue for replies and future communication. However, a handwritten card can go a long way as well. Choose the option that’s the best match for your particular situation and for the person who interviewed you.
